Meet Julia Sanchez, MSW, LCSW, LCAS
You’re here for professional services, so I’ll begin with my clinical identity: I am an integrative psychotherapist, drawing from multiple evidence‑based and holistic approaches to support mental health. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS) in North Carolina. I also hold certificates as a family herbalist, flower essence practitioner, ecotherapist, yoga instructor, and holistic health coach.
Although therapy is centered on you, the relationship between therapist and client is one of the strongest predictors of meaningful change, and most folks seeking therapy like to know a little bit about who their therapist is beyond clinical credentials. To offer a sense of who I am: I grew up between two very different places — a major U.S. city and a small Caribbean island — and that cross‑cultural upbringing shaped my understanding of home, belonging, and identity. Living between worlds taught me to navigate complexity and transition, and it informs the way I hold space for people exploring their own in‑between places. This early cross‑cultural foundation, along with my interest in social justice and meaning‑making, led me to study cultural anthropology with a focus on liberation theology and Caribbean healing traditions.
My professional path began in psychedelic research advocacy, which opened doors to learning from traditional healers in the Amazon and to more than two decades of study in plant‑centered spiritual communities. Inspired by the teachers I encountered who generously shared their own cultural traditions, I also began exploring the herbal traditions connected to my own ancestral lineages. These experiences deepened my appreciation for the role of nature, ritual, and community in healthcare. While working in nonprofit youth development and public health in Florida, I maintained a small herbal practice — work that ultimately guided me toward formal clinical training and trauma‑focused psychotherapy.
After graduate school, my family and I relocated to Asheville, North Carolina. I expanded my clinical experience as a therapist at a therapeutic boarding school for adolescents and later as the associate clinical director of a residential treatment center for women recovering from substance use disorders and complex trauma. During this time, I also developed and delivered professional trainings at national conferences on ecotherapy approaches to treating dissociation and other trauma‑related symptoms.
Across all of these seasons of life, my work has centered on integration — weaving together rigorous clinical training, cross‑cultural experience, and nature‑based practices to support adolescents and adults seeking grounded, holistic, evidence‑based care.
Meet Calyx Integrative Therapy, PLLC
And here we are. I created Calyx Integrative Therapy to offer evidence‑based therapeutic modalities woven with respect for botanical traditions. There were many years of my life when I might have benefitted from therapy, but I rejected the Western therapy paradigm of my own culture. The support and grounding I received from plant‑based healing traditions and herbal community quite literally helped me survive. Calyx is a space for people seeking support from a licensed professional — someone who is accountable to a code of ethics and clinical integrity — who also respects other healing paths, especially those supported by plant allies.
